Essential Mental Health Resolutions to Make in the New Year

Mental health

So, 2024 just ended. But can this be the beginning of some new habits?

Throughout the year we have gone through many ups and downs. And now it’s time to look back and revise about the good times, not-so-great times, and hold on to the lessons that life has taught us over this last year. As we grow older by another year and try to figure out a better life, having some resolutions on taking care of our mental health can accelerate the good decisions. Caring about our mental health more than anything else and prioritizing our Mental health, sanity and emotional health, is important to step into next year and try to cultivate a better life for ourselves.

One way we can do this is through resolutions. New year resolutions can be anything from wanting to read more, lose weight, or improve eating habits. Unfortunately many new year resolutions tend to be short lived due to unrealistic goal setting. So instead of creating big goals, it can be helpful to start with smaller ones and with manageable steps that help you accomplish your goal.

Here are few resolutions for our mental health that we should include in the new year resolution list:

  • Practice gratitude:

Practicing gratitude is an act that requires taking some time to be able to pay attention and appreciate what’s good in your life. It could be little things, such as keeping a journal, writing down what you're thankful for each day, or a warm meal and even a beautiful sunset from someone. Gratitude helps focus on the positive, decrease stress, and makes a person happier. It’s a small habit that brings big changes to your mind set and overall well being.

Hobbies can also keep your mind active and help you to stay social if they involve group activities. Regularly doing something you love helps you become more stable and happier in your daily life.

  • Make work and enough sleep priority:

Make sure to balance your work and get enough rest this year. Overwork without rest can cause to experience stress, poor health and burnout. Maintaining clear boundaries work and sticking to a regular sleep schedule you productive and energized. Sleep recharges the body and mind, allowing better focus, mood, and well-being. Making work-life balance, especially rest, part of your resolutions is one investment towards a healthier and happier you.

Life is Good
  • Focus on positivity:

Focusing on positivity means paying attention to the good things in your life and finding the bright side in tough situations. It doesn't mean ignoring problems but choosing to see what's going well instead of what's wrong. You can practice positivity by being grateful, spending time with uplifting people, and reminding yourself of your strengths. It helps you feel happier, less stressed, and more confident. The more you think good, the better energy you attract into your life and how well you handle challenges.

  • Spend time with loved once:

Time spent with loved ones has a significant impact on mental health. It provides emotional support, decreases stress levels, and increases happiness through interaction with family and friends who care for you. Sharing laughter, conversations, and meaningful moments help one feel connected and valued and can combat loneliness and improve mood. Loved ones also encourage one in times of difficulty, making challenges not as overwhelming. Continuous time spent with your loved ones will improve your relationship with them and nurture a feeling of belonging, which is an important factor for psychological well-being.

  • So at least 20 min of exercise and meditation:

This New Year, resolve to spend at least 20 minutes of the day exercising and meditating. Exercise helps maintain the strength of your body, uplifts your mood, and minimizes stress, while meditation calms the mind and enhances focus. The combination is a potent routine for both physical and mental health. You don't need fancy equipment or a gym; simple activities such as walking, stretching, or deep breathing at home can make a big difference. Start with just 20 minutes a day as a small step toward a healthier, more balanced life.

  • Start journaling:

Journaling can help you to clarify your thoughts because it is no longer all jumbled up in your mind. As a result, you may gain valuable self-knowledge and insight. It’s also a good problem-solving tool; oftentimes, one can hash out a problem and come up with solutions more easily on paper. This process helps us learn to manage our emotions in a healthy way.

Too much screen time really not good for our mental health. It can leave you stressed out and keeps you feeling tired and also it will disturb your sleep. It is easy to get caught up and get totally lost in scrolling or binge watching something that you forget to spend time with loved ones or doing something you enjoy. By setting some limitations on your own screen use you can create space in which you can relax and connect you’re your loved ones.

  • Challenge yourself:

This New Year, challenge yourself to try something new. It could be learning a skill, facing a fear, or setting a goal you’ve always wanted to achieve. By trying new things, you’ll make this year more exciting and fuller of opportunities.

  • Make your mental health priority this year:

This year, put our mental health first. Taking care of our mind is just as important as taking care of our body. Small changes, such as dealing with stress, spending quality time with loved ones, staying fit, and mindfulness, can have big impact in life. When we focus on our mental well-being, we feel more balanced, we can handle life's ups and downs more easily, and we enjoy the little moments more.
